The Game Awards were barely over before Jason Schreier bested 2030 at best and made it clear that he thought it could last longer. But… The creator himself has spoken out on the matter and confidently says that there will be no discussion about 2030 at all, but he believes that the game will be released before then.
But… Is that really possible? I’m torn between hope and reason on this issue, because of course it’s so hotly anticipated that most other things fade away. I really want to experience a really elaborate role-playing game in this world again and feel how my decisions shape my own Star Wars story.
At the same time, I’ve been there before. Blockbuster games now take at least five years to develop, and role-playing games often take even longer. If there’s going to be a real world with a human touch and a lot of content, it might as well take ten hours. It took Obsidian six years to make The Outer Worlds 2, which isn’t completely open ended and also builds on an existing predecessor so the concept and everything was clear (no, it’s not the same with a game that bugs on a 20 year old concept, it’s almost like starting from scratch).
Unfortunately, since the studio has just started, I think Schreier will be the one who gets the most right. Even if everything goes well, I don’t think they’ll be able to put together an epic RPG in just four years if they want to release it before 2030. Plus, there will likely be delays, new consoles, and so on.
I think the game will be released, a long trailer during the Game Awards shows they have good funding, but I also don’t think it will be until 2030 and I wouldn’t risk taking poison for it being for the Playstation 6, but it might as well be the Playstation 7 in 2035.
When do you think Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will be released? Can a modern and complex role-playing game be completed so quickly?
