The PSOE will not be able to shake off the accusation that the regularization of immigrants is actually an operation to fatten the electoral roll until the campaign ends next Sunday. It is assumed, according to these accusations, that all immigrants vote to the left, something empirically denied by the results of municipal elections if the vote of foreigners is analyzed.
There is no legal possibility that the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who will be able to regularize and have legal residence will be able to vote in the next general elections, given that they will not have Spanish nationality. It is likely that they can do it from 2028 for the fastest ones and as each file progresses. The real data does not matter when it comes to bringing to the minds of citizens the dangers of the regularization of immigrants, even if they live here, and are the ones who carry out the care and work for which nationals cannot be found. The complaint is effective and does not invalidate the reality that public resources must grow urgently. The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has taken his criticism of the Government of Spain to an informal meeting of European conservatives, united under the umbrella of the EPP. Feijóo has warned of the danger for Europe that Pedro Sánchez regularizes the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who are in Spain, who have arrived before December 31 and can prove they have been in the country for more than five months. Furthermore, Feijóo, in this informal meeting of European conservatives, has asked them to investigate the Adamuz railway accident in case European funds have not been used correctly in the railway area. However, in the final text of that summit in Zagreb there is no mention of Spain, except for a reference to orderly emigration and to avoid the harm of “a false solidarity.”
Immigration is a star issue for VOX, in Spain and in Europe, and it is also increasingly important for the PP, included in the Aragonese electoral campaign. In the post-election studies it will be known who has been correct in their approaches. The socialist candidate Pilar Alegría bets everything on the concerns and shortcomings of the Aragonese and defends the Government policies that have brought investments to that community. The leader of the popular parties, recently arrived in Aragon from Croatia, did not deviate from the speech on this matter that he brought from Zagreb.
European leaders, including several prime ministers, as well as the president of the European Commission, Úrsula Von der Leyen, heard from their Spanish co-religionist, both in private and public conversations, a portrait of their country’s government and its completely black president.
The Spanish MEPs consulted have not been surprised by what happened, but they do criticize that the Spanish conservative leader has not put at the forefront of his interventions “the threats to the European project and its citizens” made by the US president. These interlocutors remember that this same week the European Commissioner for the Interior and Migration, Magnus Brunner, has assured that the powers over the regularization of immigrants rest with the States. “It is the responsibility of each member state to determine the legal status of the people living in their country; we do not have powers in regularization,” he added. From this conservative summit, socialists have been disappointed by the silence regarding Donald Trump’s continued threats.
At the moment, socialists and popular people have to face the Aragonese elections with the PP at the helm, as well as with a fired-up VOX. Public services are at the forefront of Aragonese concerns, according to all surveys. Immigration does not appear until reaching fifth place. This Sunday, Pedro Sánchez assured Aragonese pensioners, and all of Spain, that their remuneration will be revalued, “with or without the support of the PP.” If the pension increase reaches Congress without other social shield measures, the PP will support it.
