The nation of Spain is preparing for what its national weather agency warns will be the first major heatwave of the summer season. This weather event is predicted to perhaps make June the hottest month ever recorded in the country.

As summer intensifies across Spain, the State Meteorological Agency has issued alerts for high temperatures in twelve regions for the coming days. Temperatures are anticipated to reach or surpass 40C (104F) in several areas.

While high temperatures are expected to begin on Thursday, forecasts indicate that the most severe heat will occur over the weekend, notably in the northeast and the Balearic Islands.

Cities such as Zaragoza, Lleida in Catalonia, and Mallorca are expected to be among the worst-hit, with temperatures ranging from 38 to 40 degrees Celsius (100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit). Tropical nights, where temperatures do not fall below 25C (77F), are also anticipated.

The regions of Aragón,Catalonia, and the Balearics are under orange weather warnings, indicating a meaningful risk.

the State Meteorological Agency forecasts that the hottest cities during this period could include Palma this Wednesday (39C/102F), Córdoba on Thursday (38C/100F) and Friday (41C/106F), Seville on Saturday (43C/109F) and Sunday (44C/111F), and Lleida and Seville next Monday (43C/109F).

Badajoz is also expected to experiance extreme heat this week.

Other regions, including Malaga, Albacete, Valencia, and Murcia, will remain under yellow alert for extreme heat, signifying a moderate health risk, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

The orange alert level signifies an even greater health risk, with the State Meteorological Agency recommending that people limit sun exposure, stay hydrated, and avoid physical activity during peak hours.

According to Spain’s System of Daily Mortality monitoring (MoMo),114 people in Spain have died from heat-related causes between June 1st and June 21st.

While high temperatures have been present throughout June, this event is expected to be classified as the first official heatwave of the summer, given that it is past June 21st.

“June 2025 will, very probably be the hottest since records began”

A period of high temperatures occurred in May, but to be classified as a heatwave, the event must affect a significant portion of the country, last for several days, and exceed a specific temperature threshold.

Rubén del Campo, the State Meteorological Agency’s official spokesperson, predicts that this event will “start on Saturday and perhaps last until the middle of next week,” making it “the first heat wave of this summer.”

This heatwave has led the State Meteorological Agency to predict that “June 2025 will, very probably be the hottest since records began.”

The monthly temperature anomaly in mainland Spain is estimated to be around 3.7C (6.7F). High temperatures (+4.2C/7.6F) are even more extreme than low temperatures (+3.2°C/5.8F), despite tropical nights in inland and coastal areas, influenced by unprecedented mediterranean Sea temperatures.

millions of people in Andalusia, madrid, aragón, and Catalonia, populous regions, are experiencing the most extreme temperatures.
