Saxon forests are currently being missed a lime cure from the air. By October, helicopters will throw almost 18,000 tons of magnesium lime, as the state -owned company Sachsenforst announced. Around 6,000 hectares of forest are supplied.
The elaborate action is still about mitigating the consequences of the acid rain from the last century. The soil protection limestone costs around 3.14 million euros this year.
Environmental pollution in the floors detectable
The acid rain was caused by sulfur and nitrogen-containing industrial emissions. According to Sachsenforst, the trees have recovered above ground. “In the root room, however, the environmental impact can still be measured today,” it said. The Vogtland, the Erzgebirge as well as the Oberlausitzer Bergland and the Zittau Mountains are particularly affected.
According to Sachsenforst, the lime is distributed through state forests as well as areas in private and other property. More than 430,000 hectares of forest have been calculated since 1986.
