Újpest FC, which is only in 9th place in the football NB I, has reportedly reached an agreement with Pál Dárdai, who was most recently the head coach of Hertha Berlin, so the former national team midfielder can become the club’s new sports director.
It has been rumored for months, and according to the signs, it will become a reality during the winter break: Pál Dárdai, the former player and head coach of Hertha Berlin, will return home according to press reports and may take up a job in the football NB I.
According to Lila Sector, a fan site that is well informed about the affairs of Újpest FC, the 49-year-old specialist will take over the position of sports director of the purple and white club. In other words, according to previous news, the club can start the professional structure of the new era – the Mol group became the majority owner of the club last spring – with a specialist with truly international experience on Megyeri út.
Dárdai’s arrival is a serious message: professional work, long-term concept and consistent construction are coming to Újpest. The transfer policy, the coaching structure and the development of the supply chain can also take a new direction. A new chapter begins
– can be read in Lila Sector’s post.
According to information from csakfoci.hu, an agreement could also be reached.
Dárdai, who was capped 61 times as a player, watched the purple and whites’ domestic champions live several times in recent months, but the club never officially confirmed that they would continue professional negotiations with him.
If the information on the fan page turns out to be true, all this may change soon.
Although Újpest entered the 2025-2026 top flight with high hopes, after 17 rounds it is only in 9th place and has collected only 19 points below the previous champions. Head coach Damir Krznar, who started the season, has already been fired, and his place was taken by Bodor Boldizsár on a temporary assignment.
Twelve points separate the 20-time Hungarian champions from the podium and thirteen points from the leader ETO FC Győr.
In the last “autumn” match of the NB I, the purples welcome Kazincbarcika at the Szusza Ferenc Stadium.
