Snapper Rocks Surfing: Empty Waves After Shark Scare (Video)

by Archynetys Sports Desk

Snapper Rocks is undoubtedly one of the most crowded surf spots on earth.

On any given day, surfers on all conceivable variety of crafts, swarm the crowded lineup, hoping to score one of the famed Gold Coast, Australia reeling righthand pointbreak waves. It is, as they say, a zoo. Good luck getting a wave to yourself unless your last name is Fanning, Parkinson, Morrison, Occhilupo, Kerr, or a select few others.

But last week, during a stormy day in which few were in the water at the famed wave, a frenzy of sharks erupted in the shallow waterchasing a bait ball, and bringing hordes of looky-loos to watch the action. And the day after? The waves cleaned up. But not many surfers were keen for a session, post sharknado. A few, however, gave it a go.

The day after the shark commotion, Gold Coasters Sheldon Simkus and Josh Kerr decided to take advantage of the scarcely populated Snapper lineup – although they opted to do so with a little precaution: the safety of a jet ski. Still, they whipped into a few uncrowded gems at the typically congested bank.

Here’s Simkus, reflecting on the shark situation, then explaining the decision to get in the water just one day after the feeding frenzy:

“Last week was the first time I’ve personally ever seen Sharks push bait up onto the beach at Snapper. I know it’s normal to see sharks in the ocean, but this was a first for me to see this happening at a beach so regularly used by many in the area. The next day treated us with a fair bit more swell, pushing the sand into a great spot. Josh Kerr and I still freaked out from seeing all the sharks decided to use the Ski, we obviously wouldn’t use it but seeing as what happened the day before we thought it was a safer option. Hope you enjoy.”
