Strategic Shift: Smeding Consolidates Distribution to Geldermalsen

Smeding, a prominent fruit and vegetable wholesaler, is undergoing a significant operational restructuring that will result in job losses at its sint Annaparochie facility in Friesland. the company is consolidating its distribution activities to a new, larger distribution centre located in Geldermalsen,Gelderland. This move is primarily driven by a significant new international contract with the Everest Group, a collaborative venture involving Dutch supermarket chains Jumbo and Picnic, alongside the German retail giant, Edeka.

Impact on Friesland Workforce

The relocation will affect a significant portion of the Sint Annaparochie workforce, which currently numbers around 260 employees. While temporary staff will be disproportionately impacted, permanent employees will also be affected. Sjaak Smeding, the company’s director, acknowledged the arduous nature of the decision, stating that while employees understand the strategic rationale, the personal impact is undeniable.

They understand why this step is taken, but it is never fun when it touches yourself.

Edeka Contract Fuels expansion

The driving force behind this strategic shift is a major long-term contract secured with Edeka, Germany’s largest supermarket group. To put this into perspective, Edeka’s scale surpasses that of all Dutch supermarkets combined. This partnership necessitates a more strategically located distribution hub to efficiently manage the flow of produce from key European ports.

Smeding will manage the distribution of fruits and vegetables arriving at the ports of Rotterdam, Vlissingen, and Antwerp for Edeka. Geldermalsen’s location offers a logistical advantage, providing easier access to the German market. This consolidation also includes the distribution for Picnic, the online supermarket that is part of the Everest Group.

Logistical Advantages of Geldermalsen

The choice of Geldermalsen as the new distribution hub underscores the increasing importance of efficient logistics in the competitive food distribution industry. Its central location within the Netherlands, coupled with its proximity to major transportation routes, makes it an ideal location for serving both the domestic and international markets. This strategic positioning is crucial for maintaining the freshness and quality of produce, especially when dealing with perishable goods.

Future Prospects for Sint Annaparochie

While the immediate impact on Sint Annaparochie is undeniably negative, Smeding suggests that the growth in Geldermalsen could potentially lead to future opportunities for the Friesland facility. However, the company’s immediate focus is on ensuring a smooth transition and establishing a solid operational foundation in Geldermalsen.

We take one step at the same time. First we want to get everything in Geldermalsen in order.

Relocation Challenges and Support

Smeding is offering affected employees the option to relocate to Geldermalsen.Though, the company acknowledges that the distance presents a significant barrier for many. The company is providing support to those seeking choice employment in the Friesland region, recognizing the disruption caused by the restructuring.
