The Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) collaborated with other medical associations from June 10 to 14 in Liguria, Italy, to raise awareness about cancer prevention.

Members of the society, along with the Italian Association of Medical oncology, the AIRC Foundation, and the AIOM Foundation, convened in Genoa at the “Villaggio Italia” (Calata Mandraccio) during the final segment of the Vespucci World tour.Over five days, they provided local residents with guidance on cancer risk factors, including alcohol consumption.

“Scientific studies demonstrate with certainty the causal role of the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the onset of various types of neoplasms, including tumors of the esophagus, liver, colorectal, breast, lips and oral cavity, larynx, and pharynx. 4% of total cancer cases can be traced back to this habit,” wrote Dr. Francesco perrone, president of the AIOM, and Dr. Nicoletta Gandolfo, president of SIRM.

Annually, Liguria sees approximately 12,000 new cancer cases, with about 40% perhaps preventable through healthy lifestyles and adherence to early diagnosis screening programs, according to the SIRM.
