Jannik Sinner, the reigning champion and world number one, is facing a strong challenge from Carlos Alcaraz at the 2025 US Open. alcaraz has the prospect to overtake Sinner for the top spot in the world rankings during this tournament.
Sinner began his 64th consecutive week as the world’s top-ranked player, but his lead is in jeopardy. before the Masters 1000 by Cincinnati, Sinner held a 3,430-point lead over Carlos Alcaraz. However, Sinner’s retirement in the final in Ohio narrowed the margin to 1,890 points, with Sinner losing 1,540 points.
This places Alcaraz in a favorable position to become the new number one once the US Open commences, holding a virtual 60-point advantage. Alcaraz only needs to discard 50 points from his previous second-round elimination, while Sinner must defend 2,000 points from his title win last year.
The Defense of Jannik
“Sinner is not afraid of making decisions, nobody like him and Alcaraz.”
Following Alcaraz’s first-round victory against Reilly Opelka, Sinner needs to reach at least the third round to maintain his hopes of remaining number one.If Alcaraz wins the tournament, he will automatically claim the top ranking. The same outcome applies if they both achieve the same result.
Sinner has two paths to retain his number one ranking: winning the tournament or scoring 60 more points than Alcaraz, meaning he must advance one round further than Carlos. Thus, Alcaraz only needs to match sinner’s result, but if they meet in the final, Alcaraz must defeat sinner to take the number one spot. The final in Flushing Meadows could determine both the champion and the world’s top-ranked player.
