Apple TV’s quietly moving comedy series Shrinking debuted a new trailer ahead of its return in January. The show, which hails from Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrencehas already aired two critically acclaimed seasons on the streamer. Shrinking stars Jason Segel as a grieving therapist and Harrison Ford as his ailing senior colleague, and has been praised for its humor and emotional depth over the years. The show has often earned favorable comparisons to the similarly moving Ted Lassowhich became something of a platform-defining title for Apple. The show’s new season will introduce new characters played by the veteran Jeff Danielsand the legendary Michael J. Fox. In ShrinkingFord’s character has Parkinson’s, an illness for which Fox has created much-valued awareness in his personal life.
The new season’s main themes seem to be gratitude and progress. Both Segel and Ford’s characters make genuine efforts to “move on” from past traumas and appreciate the gifts that life has given them. The path to progress isn’t easy, and both characters face hurdles, but they seem determined to overcome them. The trailer also includes a humorous bittersweet exchange between Ford and Fox that exemplifies what makes Shrinking so beloved. The show is currently sitting at a terrific 94% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes; the first season holds a “certified fresh” 91% score, while the second season is sitting at an even higher “certified fresh” 97% score. In his review of the second seasonCollider’s Garrett Blaney wrote that the show “still has the noteworthy heartfelt moments and sharp comedy that made the first such an underrated hit, but also finds creative ways to put these fun characters through the wringer.”
‘Shrinking’ Season 3 Will Bring Back Fan-Favorite Guest Stars
Shrinking also features Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley. The new season will bring back guest stars Brett Goldsteinwho also serves as co-creator, as well as Damon Wayans Jr., Wendie Malick and Cobie Smulders. The 11-episode third season of Shrinking will premiere with a special one-hour episode on January 28followed by a new episode every week until April 8.
