A recent study has shown that a shingles vaccine, used in Wales since 2013, can reduce the risk of mild cognitive impairment and slow the progression of dementia. This discovery could offer new hope for the treatment of dementia. The results of the study were published in the renowned journal Nature and show that the vaccine can also reduce the mortality rate in dementia patients who have already been diagnosed by almost 30 percent.

The vaccine works against the varicella-zoster virus, which causes shingles and may also affect the nervous system. The researchers suspect that protecting the nervous system from viruses could also offer protection against dementia. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that viruses affecting the nervous system have been linked in animal models to the toxic protein accumulation seen in Alzheimer’s disease.

The study took advantage of the unique opportunity presented by the Welsh vaccination program, where people aged 79 received the vaccine while those aged 80 did not. This random age limit allowed researchers to compare two very similar groups, minimizing the influence of other factors on dementia risk.

However, researchers emphasize that further research is needed to understand the precise mechanisms by which the vaccine provides protection against dementia. It is thought that both the nervous system and the immune system may play a role. Future studies could examine larger groups of people across a broader age range and also include the latest versions of the vaccine.
