Mainz / London (IT BoltWise)-The Rhineland-Palatinate State Criminal Police Office warns of new fraud on messenger services such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Criminals use these platforms to get money and personal data. Group chats with unknown members are particularly dangerous, in which attracting offers for part-time jobs or supposed trading platforms are made.

Messenger services such as WhatsApp and Telegram have become an integral part of everyday life from many people. However, with the increasing use of these platforms, the risk of becoming victims of fraud stitches also increases. The Rhineland-Palatinate State Criminal Police Office (LKA) urgently warns of dangers that have recently spread over these channels.
One of the most perfidious methods is the so-called part-time job. Here, users are invited to group chats where alleged side jobs are offered. The tasks seem simple: subscribing to YouTube channels or consequences of Instagram profiles. In order to gain the trust of the victims, they even even receive small amounts of money. But soon afterwards you should transfer money yourself, supposedly for further orders, but which never arrive.
Another popular fraud scheme is the trading platform mesh. Interested parties are lured with supposedly lucrative investment tips. The victims initially invest smaller amounts through professional -looking but fake portals. Initially, supposed profits are even paid out to create trust. But as soon as larger sums are invested, the money disappears without a trace.
The so-called voting mesh is also a popular method to get personal data. Users are lured via a link to an alleged online survey and enter their mobile phone number there. This enables fraudsters to take over the victim’s WhatsApp account and send further links on behalf of the victim or to demand money from his contacts.
In order to protect itself from such fraud stitches, the LKA advises increased caution in dealing with messenger services. Users should deactivate the possibility of being invited to groups by unknown persons and leaving suspicious groups immediately. Skepticism is also attached to side job offers or supposedly lucrative investment tips. In addition, no cell phone numbers should be entered in the case of supposed online votes and sensitive data such as bank access or ID photos should never be shared via messenger.
