Seafarer Performance Issues: astragon Response

by drbyos

Unfortunately, players don’t have the same experience. Only a day after release, there are complaints about performance, surprisingly mainly on high-end gaming rigs. Enough that developer and publisher Astragon was forced to respond to it.

“A significant portion of our community has reported disappointing performance, especially on higher-end systems, which sometimes even goes hand in hand with reduced graphics quality. From the bottom of our hearts, we are sincerely sorry if you have experienced any issues that do not meet your or our expectations and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, especially if you were waiting for this release.

Please be assured that we are taking this seriously and investigating what is causing these issues.”

Actions of course speak louder than words and fortunately they do not stop at this statement. Although they are working on patches for the (medium) long term, they are now working on a first hotfix that should provide at least some relief. It is expected to be available on the beta branch next week and will do the following:

  • implementation of NVIDIA DLSS
  • load shaders at the start of the game, instead of during gameplay. This should help performance
  • FSR, Frame Generation and Upsampling are set to 66% by default. This should boost performance for many players
  • a new Benchmark for correctly setting the settings
  • a statistics overlay to help find bottlenecks
  • possibly the option to reactivate hardware ray tracing

As mentioned, this is not the final solution. It’s a first step. At the same time, gamers can also do things themselves until the hotfix is available. The publisher recommends the following:

  • make sure graphics drivers are up to date
  • play with upscale options to see what works for you
  • check whether the auto detection has identified the correct hardware and the associated settings
  • turn off VSync
  • turn Anti-Aliasing off and on again
  • switch back Global Illumination (this causes a lot of problems)

Finally, it encourages players to keep reporting issues. This can be done via the in-game bug reporter with F4 or via a comment on this page.
