Sanchez Defeat: Historic Loss Explained

While the main opposition right-wing People’s Party (PP) won the elections held in the autonomous government parliament of Extremadura in southeastern Spain, the ruling Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) suffered a historic defeat.

Early local parliamentary elections were held in Extremadura, one of Spain’s 17 autonomous administrations, on Sunday, December 21.

Participation in the elections decreased by 7 points compared to the previous elections and remained at 62.64 percent.

According to the official figures, PP won 29 seats in the 65-seat Extremadura autonomous government parliament, PSOE 18, far-right Vox 11 and far-left Unidas Extremadura 7 MPs.

Compared to the last elections held in Extremadura in May 2023, PP increased the number of its MPs by 1, while PSOE lost 10 seats.

The biggest rise in the local elections was made by the far-right Vox party.

Vox increased the number of MPs in Extremadura from 5 to 11.

Since PP, which won the elections, cannot obtain the majority to come to power on its own, it will have to make an agreement with the far right in order to form a government.

PSOE, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, suffered a historic defeat in Extremadura.

PSOE’s presidential candidate in the elections in Extremadura, Miguel Angel Gallardon, said “we got a very bad result” and called an emergency meeting of his party’s regional leadership.

The election results in Extremadura are expected to make the future of the minority left coalition government and the central government in Spain, which has been in power since November 2023 and has lost external support for the last two months, even more difficult.

The main opposition PP reiterated its demands for early general elections.
