Following this complaint, the Municipality’s Patent Section conducted an inspection of the premises on March 21st. The inspection revealed that the location near the national gym was operating with an expired health permit.

The Municipality granted Soda Tapia a grace period of ten business days to rectify the situation.However, a subsequent inspection on April 8th revealed that the establishment had not complied with the directive and continued to operate without a valid permit. Consequently, municipal authorities ordered the immediate closure of the premises.

Unpaid Taxes Compound Soda Tapia’s Troubles

Beyond the permit issue, Soda Tapia also faces significant financial challenges. The local government has reported that the business owes ¢10,158,967.67 in unpaid patent taxes. This debt has been accumulating as the fourth quarter of 2021. To date, only a partial payment of ¢1,017,612.56 has been made as part of a payment arrangement.

According to recent data from the Ministry of Finance, tax evasion remains a persistent problem for businesses in Costa Rica, with an estimated 15% of companies failing to fully comply with their tax obligations.
