The series of ultra-thin phones sparked a lot of interest at first, but modest sales changed the direction of both companies that tried this experiment.
Samsung opened the way with the Galaxy S25 Edge, a model that proves that you can create an elegant and very slim phone without completely giving up important features. Apple‘s replica followed, with an even more minimalistic iPhone Air, conceived as a design object. But the end result was the same. Few really wanted it.
What the Galaxy S26 Edge would have looked like and what we missed
The market sent a clear message. Users prefer solid phones with long battery life, good cameras and a weight that feels in the pocket. The Edge series failed to be a realistic alternative for the general public, and Samsung decided to return to the traditional models in the range. That’s why the Galaxy S26 Edge remains a completed project on paper, but without a commercial future.
In fact, the South Koreans now prefer to focus production on the Galaxy S26 Plus, which promises much higher sales and a safer strategy than a device aimed at too small a niche.
Plans for the abandoned model show a phone with a thickness of only five point five millimeters, a value that would have made it noticeably slimmer than the previous generation. The design was heavily influenced by the iPhone aesthetic, which may have attracted undecided buyers. In addition, Samsung had found a way to integrate a slightly larger battery, despite the small dimensions.
The hardware would have received a number of familiar optimizations for this premium category. Faster RAM and a set of post-processing algorithms capable of reducing some camera limitations. However, even these improvements did not justify the continuation of the project.
