La Boudeuse’s “Opera Panique” Premieres in Saint-Agrève: A Jodorowsky Inspired Spectacle

A new theatrical workshop production brings the surreal world of Alejandro Jodorowsky to life.

A Bold New Production Takes the Stage

La Compagnie La Boudeuse is set to unveil its latest theatrical endeavor, Opera Panique, on May 17th and 18th in Saint-Agrève. This production marks the inaugural creation of the company’s new workshop theater, a collaborative effort with the socio-cultural center of Saint-Agrève.

Jodorowsky’s Absurdist Vision

The play is based on a text by Alejandro Jodorowsky, the multifaceted Franco-Chilean artist celebrated for his avant-garde films, groundbreaking comics (particularly his collaborations with Moebius), and diverse literary works spanning novels, essays, and poetry. Jodorowsky’s unique perspective promises a thought-provoking theatrical experience.

I chose this text for freedom, the absurd and the poetry of which he is full and for his humor and his irreverence. Opera Panique is a succession of sketches where we see a radical criticism of stereotypes and rigidities of the world, where we laugh and where we are seized.

Camille Buès, Director

Director’s Vision and Community Collaboration

Director Camille Buès emphasizes the play’s embrace of freedom, absurdity, and poetic expression, highlighting its humor and irreverence. Opera Panique is envisioned as a series of vignettes that offer a sharp critique of societal norms and rigid structures, inviting both laughter and introspection.

This production is a testament to community engagement, with La Boudeuse collaborating with ten amateur actors to bring this vision to life. Community theater productions like this one are vital for fostering local arts and culture, providing opportunities for participation and engagement for residents.

The Enduring Appeal of Absurdist Theater

Absurdist theatre, like Jodorowsky’s work, continues to resonate with audiences today. Its rejection of traditional narrative structures and embrace of the illogical allows for a deeper exploration of the human condition. Productions like Opera Panique offer a space for questioning, reflection, and ultimately, a renewed understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
