Ryanair Updates Baggage Fee Enforcement, Increases Staff Bonuses

Ryanair is adjusting its policies regarding hand luggage fees and employee incentives, sparking debate among travelers.

Passengers wiht cabin baggage exceeding the permitted dimensions for a small personal item may face a fee of up to £75 (€87). Thier luggage will then be placed in the aircraft’s hold.

These penalties have led to considerable frustration among passengers, particularly when they felt that gate personnel were overly zealous in identifying oversized luggage.

Ryanair’s Response to Baggage fee Concerns

“We need to encourage people. I want our terrestrial service to detain people who deceive the system.”

However, Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, addressed these concerns by announcing an increase in bonuses for staff members who identify oversized luggage.”We are going to increase them from € 1.50 to € 2.50, probably from the beginning of the winter schedule in November this year,” he said, adding that he has no regrets.

O’Leary further stated that the airline would remove the upper limit on these bonuses, previously capped at €80 per month,to further incentivize employees to enforce the baggage policy: “We need to encourage people. I want our terrestrial service to detain people who deceive the system.”

Understanding Ryanair’s Baggage Allowance

Ryanair permits all passengers to carry one small personal bag free of charge, provided it fits under the seat and does not exceed dimensions of 40 x 30 x 20 cm. A second cabin bag, such as a small wheeled suitcase with maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20 cm, can be brought onboard for an additional fee.
