Ruby Slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" Fetch Record $32.5 Million at Auction
In a thrilling auction event, a pair of iconic ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in "The Wizard of Oz" sold for a staggering $32.5 million. This extraordinary price surpasses all expectations, far exceeding the initial estimate of $3 million. The high bidding war, involving several phone bidders, drove the price up to an astronomical sum within minutes, making these slippers the most expensive piece of movie memorabilia ever sold.
A Journey Back to Oz
These legendary red heels were part of the Judy Garland Museum collection in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, when they vanished in 2005. Terry Jon Martin, a long-time felon, stole the slippers, hoping to make a "one last score." He wasn’t caught until 2018 when the FBI recovered the iconic shoes. Martin later admitted to the crime and was sentenced to time served due to his poor health.
The shoes were returned to showman Michael Shaw, who had originally loaned them to the museum, and then made their way to the Heritage Auctions block.
Bidding Frenzy
The auction attracted global attention, with over 800 people following the proceedings. The "Wizard of Oz" theme echoed the recent film "Wicked," a prequel to the famous classic, further fueling interest.
Another "Wizard of Oz" item up for auction, the Wicked Witch of the West’s hat, fetched $2.4 million.
"The Road Less Traveled" Continues
The Judy Garland Museum, who actively campaigned for funds to purchase the slippers, didn’t place the winning bid. This acquisition marks a significant chapter in the history of “The Wizard of Oz,” a film that has captivated generations with its timeless story and enduring magic.
