Rome Tower Collapse: Renovation Accident

A medieval tower in the heart of the capital of Italianear the famous ruins of the Roman Forum, partially collapsed on Monday during renovation work on the structure, seriously injuring at least one workerItalian media reported.

Hundreds of tourists watched as firefighters used a moving ladder and carried a stretcher to the upper level of the Torre dei Conti. Three workers were rescued, while one was still trapped inside the structureaccording to the newspaper Corriere della Sera.

The Tower of the Counts It was built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III as a residence for his family. The tower was damaged in an earthquake in 1349 and suffered subsequent collapses in the 17th century.

Italian media reports indicated that both Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Italy‘s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli were at the scene.
