Boosting National Defense: Romania’s Foray into Advanced Military Drones

Romania is making critically important strides in bolstering its defense capabilities with the development and imminent production of six distinct military drone projects. The initial focus is on two models, christened “CUDA” and “Sirin,” both engineered for superior reconnaissance and resilience against electronic jamming. Thes advancements signal a strategic move towards enhancing Romania’s surveillance and operational capacities.

Sources close to Carfil Brasov and Periscope Aviation, the collaborative entities behind these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs),highlight the unique attributes of each model. While both are designed to withstand jamming, the “Sirin” drone stands out due to its ample transport capacity and its specialized ability to conduct maritime flights.

Technical Specifications and Operational Capabilities

The CUDA model is designed as a versatile reconnaissance platform. Key features include:

  • Payload Capacity: Capable of carrying up to 1.5 kg of sensors and equipment.
  • Flight Endurance: A flight duration of approximately 26 minutes, subject to variations based on payload and environmental conditions.
  • Operational Altitude: Can reach a maximum altitude of 4,000 meters.
  • Interaction Range: Supports soil-to-air communications up to 50 km and air-to-air communications over a 200 km radius.

These specifications position CUDA as a valuable asset for tactical reconnaissance and surveillance operations.

Sirin: Maritime Operations and Heavy Payload Delivery

Enhanced Capabilities for Diverse Missions

The Sirin drone distinguishes itself with enhanced capabilities, especially in maritime operations and payload delivery:

  • High Transport capacity: Boasts a significant payload capacity of 14.5 kg, enabling the deployment of a wider array of sensors and equipment.
  • Extended Flight Time: Offers a flight time of 36 minutes, providing ample time for mission execution.
  • Altitude Ceiling: Can operate at altitudes up to 5,000 meters.
  • communication Range: Features a soil-to-air communication range of 100 km and an air-to-air range of 200 km.
  • Maritime flight Capability: Designed to withstand the challenging conditions of maritime environments, including strong winds and corrosive elements.

The maritime flight capability is particularly noteworthy, as many drones are not equipped to handle the rigors of such environments. This feature enhances Romania’s ability to monitor and secure its coastal regions.

strategic Focus: jamming Resistance and Avoiding FPV Models

A source within Techrider confirmed that while two of the six drone projects are designed for maritime use, they are not slated for production this year. Moreover, the Romanian army is not currently planning to procure First-Person View (FPV) drones, which have seen extensive use in the conflict in Ukraine. This decision reflects a strategic focus on drones with advanced anti-jamming capabilities and specialized functions.

There are two drones designed for the maritime area, but they are not in terms of production this year.

Mircea Petru Tanţău, director of Carfil Brașov, acknowledged that while FPV drones are not currently in the production pipeline, their manufacturing could be expedited if demand arises.

Such vehicles are not planned yet to be produced in Romania. However, if there is a demand, their production is not tough.

Production Targets and Future Prospects

Carfil Brașov aims to produce between 20 and 25 units of each drone type this year, totaling approximately 50 drones. Production is expected to commence in july, utilizing Carfil-manufactured components.

We set out to make between 20 and 25 drones in each type,so about 50 pieces this year. We hope that from July we will start the production with carfil components.

The collaboration between Carfil and Periscope Aviation offers a extensive solution, encompassing drone manufacturing, payload development, testing, approval processes, and pilot/operator training.carfil has established a center of excellence to integrate these activities.

Training and International Collaboration

To ensure the readiness of drone crews,Romania has partnered with the French army, leveraging an advanced training simulator developed by the French government. This simulator provides realistic combat scenarios, enhancing the preparedness of Romanian drone operators.

market Opportunities and Anti-Jamming Technology

Carfil intends to participate in Romanian state auctions and is engaged in discussions with regional customers interested in the advanced anti-jamming capabilities of its drones. One project proposes the deployment of jamming-resistant drones in the Danube Delta, an area particularly susceptible to interference, where commercial drone models often struggle.
