science enthusiasts and culture lovers are invited to explore the intricacies of the human brain at the upcoming Robert Boyle Summer School, scheduled from June 5th to 8th. The event promises an engaging exploration of the brain, described as the most complex instrument in the universe.

The 13th edition of the summer school will take place in Waterford City and Lismore, featuring a blend of thought-provoking talks and cultural activities. Attendees can look forward to a garden party set against the backdrop of Lismore Castle, the birthplace of Robert Boyle in 1627.

Festival director Dr Eoin Gill of Calmast in the South East technological University (SETU) stated, “Building on the success of January’s winter school at the RDS, this year’s program features a stellar line-up of leading thinkers from neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry and the arts promising a weekend of inspiring dialog, revelation and connection.”

The summer school boasts an remarkable lineup of speakers, each bringing their unique viewpoint on the brain and related fields.

Prof Ray Dolan of University College London, a leading expert on neuroscience and behavior, will discuss the work of the late Irish neuroscientist Eleanor Maguire, particularly her study of London taxi drivers. Her research demonstrated that navigation experience can physically alter the structure of the adult brain.

Prof Colin Doherty, a consultant neurologist at St James’s Hospital and head of TCD School of Medicine, will delve into “the neurobiology of drawing,” combining his neurological expertise with his passion for art to examine how the brain processes creativity.

Prof Luke Gibbons of Maynooth University will explore the cultural, religious, and scientific responses to Darwin’s theories, including Irish perspectives found in James Joyce’s Ulysses.

Dr David Delany of SETU will present “The Science of the Superhuman,” introducing a new theory of intelligence and methods for unlocking cognitive potential.

Clinical psychiatrist Prof Veronica O’Keane will discuss the neuroscience of human memory and conscious experience, while Dr Nora Salaberry of Calmast will led an interactive session on perception.

SETU president Prof Veronica Campbell will inaugurate the academic sessions on June 6th, drawing from her extensive background in neuropharmacology and her previous role as inaugural chair of TCD’s Global Brain Health Institute.
