In the past, childbirth was mainly a clinical thing: sterile rooms, bright lights, needles and pain. But more and more women are taking a different approach. They take back control and discover that giving birth is not only intense, but can even be enjoyable.

While that may sound like a myth, a 2024 survey from Fin PleasureVibe found that one in three participants is interested in self-pleasure during labor. For some women, an orgasmic birth is really an option, and the conversation about it is gaining momentum within obstetrics, doulas and doctors.

Taboos
“This isn’t a new conversation, but it’s finally getting louder, and I’m all for it,” says gynecologist Roxanne Pero. “As an integrative gynecologist, I have seen how fear and taboos around sexual health have led to misinformation and left women vulnerable, especially during childbirth. When women can bridge the gap in knowledge and body awareness about sexual health and childbirth, it feels like real empowerment. We need that now more than ever in women’s healthcare.”

Orgasmic childbirth
In other words, the same body that can create life can also experience pleasure. “I think the idea of an orgasmic birth is fantastic,” says Pero. “Over the years, birth after birth in my practice, I began to see how hospital births can sometimes take away the beauty, strength and autonomy of women. I began to take a different approach: asking each woman how she wanted her experience. We place so much emphasis on the health of the baby, which is of course essential, but often forget that the mother can also be central.”

Oxytocin
Physiologically speaking, an orgasm during childbirth makes perfect sense. “During an orgasm, oxytocin is released, the same hormone that stimulates contractions and promotes bonding after birth,” Pero explains. “Endogenous opioids, the body’s natural painkillers, are also released, causing feelings of relaxation and euphoria. These responses are similar to some of the processes that occur during childbirth.” This can help the uterus contract more efficiently, support dilation and reduce anxiety and pain.

Confidential bond
But an orgasmic birth is a personal choice, and the environment counts. According to Pero, giving birth at home is often the most supportive place. “Here, women build a deep, confidential bond with their midwife, who visits them at home for prenatal appointments lasting 30 to 60 minutes. The midwife gets to know the family, the space and the energy of the home, creating a real sense of security.” This is often more difficult in a hospital. “Most prenatal visits are limited to 15 minutes, with much focus on the baby’s health rather than the mother’s birth plan. It’s easy to see why conversations about pleasure during labor are still challenging for many conventional gynecologists.”

Advantages
The benefits are great. “Studies show that the most effective way to create a positive birth experience is through strong support during labor, minimal interventions and thorough preparation,” shares Pero. “True preparation isn’t just about logistics; it’s about body awareness and acceptance. Open conversations about orgasmic childbirth can help women connect more deeply with their bodies and form a more positive experience.”
