Rehabilitated sea turtles returned to ocean near Canaveral National Seashore
On Feb. 19, 2019, sixteen endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles were returned to the waters near Canaveral National Seashore, Florida by the SeaWorld Orlando rescue team after months of rehabilitation at SeaWorld Orlando’s critical care facility.

“If it weren’t for the space program, much of this area could have been developed into condominiums,” said Captain Alex Gorichky of Local Lines Guide Service, reflecting on the profound impact of NASA on the region. “We must find a way to balance progress with respect for the environment.”
Gorichky echoed the sentiments of many who want to see sustainable practices adopted by space agencies and companies. “We don’t begrudge the space industry for its advances but hope that the interests of the seashore and its wildlife are considered,” he stated.
The future of Canaveral National Seashore hangs in the balance as the space industry continues to grow. The next few years will be critical in determining whether the park can maintain its ecological integrity while supporting the aviation and aerospace industries.
