The Tampa Bay Rays are in talks to be sold to a group spearheaded by Jacksonville-based developer Patrick Zalupski, according to a team announcement. Principal owner Stuart sternberg is currently in exclusive negotiations with the Zalupski group.

The team released a statement saying, “The Tampa Bay Rays announced that the team has recently commenced exclusive discussions with a group led by Patrick Zalupski, Bill Cosgrove, Ken Babby and prominent Tampa Bay investors concerning a possible sale of the team. Neither the Rays nor the group will have further comment during the discussions.”

According to Sportico, Zalupski has signed a letter of intent to purchase the Rays. It is important to note that a letter of intent does not represent a finalized agreement.

Stuart Sternberg took over as principal owner in October 2005, after leading the group that initially purchased the team from Vince Naimoli in 2004.In 2008, he rebranded the “Devil Rays” to the Rays. Since then, the team has achieved the Majors’ third-highest winning percentage (.545), surpassed only by the Dodgers and Yankees.

Despite the team’s success under Sternberg’s leadership, securing a new long-term stadium in the Tampa Bay area has remained a challenge for nearly two decades.

A previous plan to construct a new ballpark at the Tropicana Field site, as part of the Historic Gas Plant District revitalization, was abandoned in March, according to an announcement by Sternberg. At the time, MLB issued a statement affirming its “remains committed to finding a permanent home for the Club in the Tampa Bay region for their fans and the local community.”

Zalupski is the founder, president, and CEO of Dream Finders Homes and a member of the University of Florida’s Board of Trustees. Cosgrove is the CEO of Union Home Mortgage. Babby founded the Fast Forward Sports Group and owns two Minor League teams: the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and the Double-A Akron RubberDucks.
