A meaningful fire has broken out at a plastic landfill near Rynholec, in the Rakovník region of the Czech Republic, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Firefighters are battling the blaze, which has already led to several injuries due to overheating.

Rapid Escalation and Emergency response

The fire, which started at approximately 6:38 PM local time, quickly spread across the 200×200 meter landfill, which is piled approximately five meters high with loose plastics. As of 9:45 PM, over 36 fire units were on the scene, with more en route, according to updates posted on Network X by the fire department.

Challenges and On-Site Conditions

Jan Sýkora, a spokesperson for Central Bohemian firefighters, highlighted the challenges posed by the nature of the burning material. Given that it is in bulk plastics, where the spread of fire does not prevent anything, there is a very high temperature on the spot. This intense heat has already resulted in multiple firefighters requiring treatment for overheating. Emergency services spokesperson Monika Nováková confirmed that at least four firefighters have received medical attention.

To combat the blaze, the intervention commander requested specialized equipment, including a large-capacity CV 40 Taurus tank and a CZS 40 Titan, as reported by the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic on Network X.

Environmental Monitoring and Public Safety

The Kamenice chemical Laboratory is actively monitoring air quality in the surrounding villages. While initial reports indicate favorable atmospheric conditions with smoke rising vertically, officials are advising residents in the wider area to avoid ventilating their homes due to potential odors. we are now importing the foam to the place so that we can at least localize it, Sýkora added, indicating efforts to contain the fire’s spread.

The incident underscores the environmental risks associated with plastic waste management. According to recent data from the European Surroundings Agency, plastic waste generation continues to rise, posing significant challenges for recycling and disposal infrastructure across Europe. Incidents like the Rynholec landfill fire highlight the urgent need for improved waste management practices and stricter regulations to prevent similar occurrences.

Ongoing Situation

Firefighting efforts are ongoing, and authorities anticipate a prolonged operation due to the large quantity of burning plastic. Archynetys.com will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
