He praised what he said was a unique cruise missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons and flying up to 14,000 kilometers.
“The decisive tests have now been completed,” Putin said in a video released by the Kremlin of the meeting of military leaders.
Putin ordered the preparation of “the infrastructure for the Russian armed forces to start using this weapon”.
The Russian dictator described the missile as a “unique formation like no other in the world.” He claimed that “Burevestnik’s” “range of activity is unlimited”.
In the last test on October 21, the missile flew for about 15 hours and 14,000 kilometers, said Valery Gerasimov, commander of the Russian army. He added that these are not the maximum capabilities of the weapon.
Putin announced the development of the missile in 2018.
The missile test comes as peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have stalled, despite US President Donald Trump’s determination to end the war quickly upon his return to the White House.
Trump imposed sanctions on Russia’s two biggest oil companies on Wednesday, saying his talks with Putin to end the war in Ukraine were “not moving forward.”
On Saturday, Trump, who previously expressed his determination to meet Putin in Budapest soon, said he was “not going to waste my time” on another summit with Putin.
Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitriev met with Trump administration officials on Friday and Saturday, and talks are expected to continue on Sunday.
Putin, for his part, said on Sunday that he did not want to set a timetable for when the fighting would end.
“We are not going to coordinate anything with any dates or events,” the Russian dictator said, declaring that “we will base our actions on military rationality.”
