Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Minister of Finance (Minister of Finance) Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa reveals the reason the government has canceled laying off employees within the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) even though it is carrying out major reforms.

According to Purbaya, this step is not possible because it conflicts with personnel regulations and risks causing legal problems.

“When it comes to taxes, finance or civil servants, we can’t lay people off carelessly. I asked, ‘Can I just stay home or not?’. Turns out I can’t. Later you could be sued at the PTUN (State Administrative Court) and lose. So in the end it didn’t happen,” said Purbaya at a Working Meeting with Commission XI DPR RI, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (4/2).

Instead, the Ministry of Finance chose to rotate and transfer positions as part of internal reforms. At DJBC, the government has replaced around 34 officials who served in the central area or were deemed to have suboptimal performance.

This step is called a shock therapy effort to improve supervision and services.

Similar reforms were also carried out at the Directorate General of Taxes. In the near future, more than 45 tax employees will be moved from areas considered ‘fat’ to quieter areas.

This rotation targets employees who are considered to still have intense relationships with certain taxpayers.

“This week we will move more than 45 people to quieter places,” he said.

On the other hand, employees who are considered to have integrity and good performance will actually be placed in more strategic positions. The government hopes that this approach will be able to improve governance without violating applicable legal provisions.

Purbaya also mentioned the existence of legal action against unscrupulous officers in the region, including arrest operations by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

He emphasized that the government would not intervene in the legal process, although it would still provide proportional assistance.

“I will provide legal assistance, but will not intervene. If you’re wrong, you’re guilty, if you’re not, don’t be punished.”abuse,” he stressed.
