PSI to Elect Chairperson in July via Open Forum: A New Era of Political Openness?
Indonesian Solidarity Party Embraces “Super Open” Model
The Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) is set to host a critically important event in July in Solo, Central Java: a “Great Election” to determine the next Party Chairperson. This forum marks a pivotal moment for the party, signaling a move towards greater inclusivity and transparency in its leadership selection process.
According to PSI Deputy Chairperson, Andy Budiman, this election represents the dawn of a “super open party,” one that is collectively owned by its members, rather than being controlled by specific families or elite factions. This initiative aims to reshape the political landscape by empowering grassroots participation.
“One Man, One Vote”: Democratizing the Election Process
The core principle of the Great Election is “one Man, One Vote,” ensuring that each PSI member has an equal say in choosing the next chairperson. This approach underscores PSI’s commitment to aligning with the desires of the community, particularly the younger generation, by giving them a direct role in shaping the party’s future direction.
This move towards direct democracy within a political party is relatively novel in Indonesia. while many parties claim to represent the people, few offer such direct avenues for members to influence leadership decisions. the PSI’s experiment could set a precedent for other parties to follow, potentially revitalizing Indonesian politics.
This momentum will be an significant history for us to build a new political tradition.

E-Voting and Candidate Eligibility
The election will leverage technology thru an online or e-vote system, streamlining the process and enhancing accessibility for all PSI members. This digital approach reflects the party’s focus on engaging with a tech-savvy electorate.
Furthermore, the PSI is opening the field to any party cadre or community member who shares the party’s vision. To be eligible, candidates must secure the support of at least five Regional Management Boards (DPW) at the provincial level and twenty regional boards (DPD) at the city/district level. This requirement ensures a degree of established support within the party structure.
Kaesang Pangarep‘s Perspective
Current PSI chairperson Kaesang Pangarep has confirmed the preparations for the election, initially slated for may but now scheduled for July. He emphasized that Solo is prepared to host the event.
Pangarep has also stated that anyone meeting the specified criteria is welcome to run for the position. The specific requirements will be detailed by the Steering Committee (SC) team.
Everything is smooth. Everything is healthy. All may (run for themselves),everything may. There are conditions, there are conditions. Later it will be issued by the SC team.

Implications for Indonesian Politics
The PSI’s “Great Election” could have far-reaching implications for Indonesian politics. by embracing a more open and democratic process, the party is attempting to differentiate itself from conventional political structures. Whether this approach will translate into increased support and influence remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly represents a bold experiment in political engagement.
