Professor John Upham: A Lifelong Legacy in Respiratory Medicine

Professor John Upham’s decades-long dedication to respiratory research have brought revolutionary changes to asthma treatment and medical education, making him a pivotal figure in modern healthcare. His work exemplifies the power of collaboration between research, clinical practice, and education.

40 Years of Impactful Work

Reflecting on a 40-year career, John Upham emphasizes the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. “When research, healthcare, and teaching unite,” he says, “the community benefits immensely.” This holistic approach drives continuous improvement, a principle Metro South Health wholeheartedly embraces.

A Career Rooted in Passion

Upham has been a cornerstone of PAH (Prince Albert Hospital’s) respiratory department since the 1980s, returning after various stints in Perth and overseas in 2007. His role as the MSH (Metro South Health) Executive Director of Research from 2019 to 2024 adds another layer to his contributions. Concurrent appointments with the University of Queensland have further enriched his impact.

Revolutionizing Asthma Treatment

For nearly two decades, Upham delved into asthma research. His findings addressed a gap between lab observations and clinical applications. “Historically, we could observe cell reactions in asthma in a test tube,” Upham explains, “but translating that to real-life treatments was challenging. Today, we have advanced medications that directly target these issues.” Personalized medicine now focuses on treating the root causes of asthma rather than merely managing symptoms.

Transforming Medical Education

Upham’s research has also reshaped how medical students learn about respiratory disease. Current curricula now introduce clinical experiences early, dedicating 7-8 weeks to lung disease studies. “Students now engage with patients from the beginning, learning about personalized medicine and causal treatments,” he notes. This early exposure deepens their understanding and prepares them better for future practice.

A Helicopter View of Healthcare

Upham credits his multifaceted experience across clinical work, research, and teaching as key to his influence. His perspective allows him to envision broad changes over time, ensuring that Metro South Health remains a leader in clinical care, research, and training.

A Legacy of Change

Upham’s contributions have far-reaching implications. Patients with severe asthma can now lead fuller, more active lives thanks to his research. The legacy he leaves will continue to shape the future of respiratory care and medical education.

Leaving a Mark on Metro South Health

Following his retirement from the role of MSH Executive Director of Research in December 2024, Consultant Geriatrician and University of Queensland Associate Professor Salih Salih will take on the acting directorship temporarily. Upham leaves behind a rich legacy, one that will inspire and guide future generations of healthcare professionals.

As we look toward the future, Professor John Upham’s work stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and dedication. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape the landscape of respiratory medicine.
