Arrest in Naples Following Catanzaro Investigation

A man residing in the Naples area is now under house arrest, suspected of orchestrating a scam targeting elderly residents in Catanzaro. The arrest, executed on Saturday, May 3rd, was a collaborative effort involving the mobile units of Catanzaro and Naples, along with the Giugliano police station.The operation was conducted under the order of the Court of Catanzaro, Second Criminal Section, acting on a request from the local Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The modus Operandi: Exploiting Trust and Familial Bonds

The alleged crimes occurred in November 2023. The suspect is accused of impersonating a postal worker to gain access to the victims’ homes. Once inside, he allegedly convinced the elderly individuals to hand over approximately two thousand euros in cash, along with valuable jewellery. The ruse involved claiming the money and jewels were needed to cover an urgent financial obligation, purportedly a MORE (likely referring to a tax or fee) owed by one of the victim’s grandchildren.

“The suspect would pretend to be a post office employee and he would go to the home of the victims to collect a sum of money… allegedly aimed at paying a MORE in the interest of one of them Grandchild.”
