Stanford Study: Finding Growth Opportunities After Catastrophes
Research suggests that adopting a positive perspective after devastating events can lead to lasting, beneficial changes.
Catastrophes, while devastating, can serve as catalysts for positive change, especially when individuals adopt a growth-oriented perspective, according to a new study led by Stanford researchers.
The study,involving a randomized,controlled trial,focused on shifting the mindsets of adults who had experienced a catastrophe such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants underwent a one-hour intervention designed to help them identify growth opportunities within their experiences.
The results, published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, indicated that those who received the intervention reported lower levels of depression three months later compared to a control group. Furthermore, blood tests revealed reduced levels of C-reactive protein, an inflammatory marker associated with chronic stress and disease.
