The Vatican medical team reported that Pope Francis is in critical condition, requiring “high flows” of oxygen to aid his breathing. Additionally, he received blood transfusions after blood tests revealed a low platelet count, a condition known as thrombocytopenia. Platelets play a crucial role in blood clotting and wound healing, and their deficiency can be a serious complication.

Despite his critical condition, Pope Francis remains fully conscious and alert. He has been resting in an armchair and is experiencing more pain compared to the previous day. The doctors emphasized that the pope’s medical prognosis is reserved, highlighting the ongoing importance of intensive care.

For the second consecutive week, Pope Francis is unable to deliver his traditional noon Sunday blessing, a gesture that, if manageable, could have been conducted from the hospital.
