toledo Allergology Service Honored for Groundbreaking Research
The Allergology Service of the University Hospital Complex of Toledo has been awarded for its outstanding communication in the respiratory category at a recent meeting of the Andalusian Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology in Ayamonte, Huelva. The award recognizes their work on the correlation between weather patterns, pollution levels, and pollen concentrations in Toledo.

The study, titled ‘Influence of the meteorological factors and chemical pollutants on the concentrations of polenes in Toledo from 1994 to 2024’, was conducted by allergologists Angel moral Moral de Gregorio, Raúl Guzmán Rodríguez, Mercedes Ruiz Valero, daniel Pujol González, Carlos Senent Sánchez, from the University Hospital of Toledo, and Dr. Francisco Francisco Feo Brito Brito of the UCLM.
Three Decades of Data
Dr. Ángel Moral, head of the Aerobiology Unit and lead author, stated that the award-winning research encompasses data collected from 1994 to 2024. The study tracked the evolution of pollen types, sensitization patterns, and their correlation with weather conditions and chemical pollutants over the 31-year period in Toledo.

Impact on Respiratory Health
The research focused on patients in Toledo with rhinoconjunctivitis and/or seasonal asthma who had resided in the area for at least five years. results indicated an increased prevalence of sensitization to all pollen types, notably cuppresaceas. The concentrations of most pollens have also risen, with the exception of amarantáceas, asteraceas, and oak.
The average annual pollen count was 52,765,with 86 percent classified as allergenic, including cuppresaceas, olive, grasses, urticáceas, shadow banana, amarantáceas, artemisia, and oak. During the study period, the average temperature increased by 1.2°C.
Dr. Moral emphasized a clear upward trend in the quantity of pollen collected in toledo over the past 31 years. He suggests this is likely linked to climate change, specifically the rise in temperature and air pollution caused by increased ozone levels. This, in turn, contributes to a higher prevalence of sensitization to the majority of allergenic pollens.
Frequently Asked Questions About Pollen Allergies
- What are the common symptoms of pollen allergies?
- Common symptoms include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and scratchy throat.
- how can I reduce my exposure to pollen?
- Keep windows closed, use air conditioning, monitor pollen forecasts, and shower after spending time outdoors.
- When is pollen season the worst?
- Pollen season varies depending on the region and type of pollen, but generally, tree pollen is highest in spring, grass pollen in summer, and weed pollen in fall.
