Two Polish freestyle skiers, including snowboarder Ali Olsanski, who is well-known in the world of extreme sports, have died in an avalanche in the High Tatras of Slovakia, the “TVP World” portal writes.

The avalanche came down a steep slope below the Nizhny Popradsky Štrbin pass on the top of Poprad Hill.

According to the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service, eyewitnesses from Poland reported that two men were buried under the avalanche. Neither they nor the victims had avalanche transceivers – safety equipment that transmits and receives 457 kHz frequency signals, allowing people buried in snow to be found.

After a few minutes, five Czech ski mountaineers, equipped with transmitters and shovels, contacted the rescue service and immediately began a search for the skiers.

The Czechs managed to find one of the victims and the team tried to give him first aid, unfortunately he died from his injuries.

The rescue service sent a helicopter with a team and a dog guide to the scene, which found the body of the other skier.

A. Olshanskis was famous for his extremely steep descents in the Tatras, the Alps and the Himalayas. According to the Polish mountain news portal “Tatromaniak“, both men were experienced fans of winter sports.
