Trump to NATO countries: first stop oil from Russia

President Donald Trump has written NATO countries a letter in which he says they should first stop importing oil from Russia and have to come up with strict sanctions before the US proceeds to more sanctions against Russia.

“I am willing to sanctions against Russia, as soon as all NATO countries do the same and stop buying oil from Russia.” He also insists on heavier sanctions against Russia.

Trump has previously threatened with what he calls “secondary sanctions” directed against Russia. These are indirect sanctions directed against third parties who do not have a sanction policy against Russia. He refers to China, which is an important trading partner of Russia. It would be American sanctions, but Trump suggests that all NATO countries announce such sanctions against China as a group.

Trump is thinking of rates of the order of 50 to 100 percent when it comes to trade with China. With the import of merchandise from India, Trump has already levied 25 percent extra import duties because that country is introducing so much oil from Russia. But he has not yet imposed such a sanction against China.

The NATO countries Hungary, Slovakia and Turkey introduce Russian oil. Some EU member states such as Hungary also depend on Russian natural gas.
