The tragic suicide of a 26-year-old police officer in Pennsylvania has ignited a renewed discussion about the potential risks associated with LASIK surgery. The officer, identified as Ryan Kingerski, underwent the procedure to meet departmental vision standards but suffered severe, long-term complications that ultimately led to his death. His suicide note contained the heartbreaking message: “The surgery took everything from me.”

According to FOX NEWS, Ryan Kingerski was a member of the Penn Township Police Department. He opted for LASIK surgery in the summer of 2024 to comply with vision requirements for active duty.

Complications and Despair

“The operation in just 12 seconds destroyed my son’s life.”

Ryan was told by the clinic that the procedure was “simple, safe, and fast recovery.” However, he soon experienced constant pain and blurred vision, which substantially impacted his quality of life. These complications spiraled into a loss of control over his life.

Post-surgery, Ryan developed a range of debilitating symptoms, including headaches, blurred vision, ghosting, floaters, and photophobia. These issues severely affected his daily life and ability to perform his duties as a police officer. Despite seeking medical treatment, his symptoms persisted for five months, eventually forcing him to resign from his position. His family reported that medical professionals dismissed his concerns, attributing them to a prolonged recovery period. The clinic, “LasikPlus,” terminated their medical relationship after Ryan shared his experiences online.

Overwhelmed by his physical and mental anguish, Ryan ultimately took his own life. His suicide note, with the poignant line, “This operation took everything from me,” deeply saddened his loved ones. Ryan’s father, Tim, expressed his grief, stating, “The operation in just 12 seconds destroyed my son’s life.” His mother, Stephanie, tearfully questioned why she was not informed of the risks, believing it to be a routine procedure.

In response to the concerns raised, “LasikPlus” issued a statement asserting that “light life is usually unable to attribute a single reason,” while emphasizing that the risks were disclosed prior to the surgery.However, Ryan’s father, Tim, disputes this, stating, “The relationship between mental health and surgery to wholly change the prince.
