Pokémon & Nintendo Switch 2: Success Fuels Optimism

Nintendo announced Thursday that it has sold more than 2.2 million copies of “Pokemon Pokopia” in just four days since its launch, with the game’s popularity helping to allay fears about the Switch 2‘s sales momentum.

Industry observers had previously worried about a lack of flagship titles to drive Switch 2 sales, while soaring memory chip prices fueled market concerns about the impact on profit margins.

This new life simulation game, derived from the main Pokemon series, has been widely praised by critics and has a score of 89 on the aggregator Metacritic.

The game is a “surprise hit,” Jefferies analyst Atul Goyal wrote in a note to clients.

“Pokopia serves as a crucial software enabler, accelerating the adoption of the… (Switch 2) installed base by capturing the lucrative non-gaming segment,” he said.

Nintendo had previously attracted a large audience with the island life simulator “Animal Crossing: New Horizons”, which became a real escape phenomenon during the COVID-19 pandemic.
