Google’s Tensor G6 Chip to Utilize TSMC’s 2nm Process

The Pixel 11 series may see a significant leap in processing power with Google’s reported move to TSMC’s 2nm process for the Tensor G6 chip.

A recent report indicates that Google is planning to expedite the adoption of TSMC’s 2nm process for its Tensor G6 chip, a move that could outpace previous upgrade cycles.

The initial Tensor chip, featured in the Pixel 6 (2021), was built using Samsung’s 5nm process. The subsequent Tensor G2 chip in 2022 continued with the same process, even as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 advanced to a 4nm process. Google caught up a year later with the Tensor G3, which was the first to use a 4nm process. The current Tensor G4 follows suit, despite Qualcomm and MediaTek chips already utilizing a 3nm process. Google’s anticipated shift to TSMC later in 2025 with the Tensor G5 will mark their transition to a 3nm process.

However, according to reports, Google aims to stay ahead of the curve next year.

It’s being reported (via analyst @dnystedt) that Google intends to use TSMC’s 2nm process for the Tensor G6 in the Pixel 11 series, expected in 2026. If this holds true, it would signify a change in Google’s strategy to keep pace with its competitors. The next Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset is also expected to use a 3nm process. This could potentially position Google ahead of its rivals, as a 2nm Snapdragon chip is not expected to arrive until after the Tensor G6. However, there is word that Qualcomm might partner with TSMC for a 3nm version of their upcoming Snapdragon flagship, while Samsung might produce a 2nm version specifically for Galaxy devices.

For now, the focus remains on Google’s initial transition to TSMC’s 3nm process later in 2025 with the Tensor G5. However, thes reports indicate Google’s ambition for rapid advancements.
