Diplomatic relations between Peru and Mexico have further deteriorated after the Peruvian congress declared Mexican President Claudia sheinbaum persona non grata. This action follows Mexico’s decision to grant asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is facing trial for her alleged involvement in the coup d’état attempt led by former President Pedro Castillo.

According to reports from El País, the Foreign Relations Commission of the peruvian Congress based its decision on Sheinbaum’s perceived support for Castillo and her alleged calls for his release. The motion passed with 63 votes, citing an “offense to the Peruvian democratic system” due to criticisms of the leaders who succeeded Castillo.

Prior to this, on October 8, the Foreign Relations Commission had already signaled its intent to declare Sheinbaum persona non grata after she met with Argentine lawyer Guido Croxatto, who leads Castillo’s international defence, and voiced support for Castillo’s release.

The motion’s final vote was delayed due to the temporary dismissal of President Dina Boluarte, who was quickly replaced by José Jerí.

fujimori Fernando Rospigliosi, the president in charge of Congress, stated that Sheinbaum’s statements constitute interference and “discredit the Peruvian nation,” in addition to the asylum granted to Chávez, who She is prosecuted for a “common crime.”

Chávez remains at the Mexican embassy in Lima awaiting safe conduct to leave the country. the Peruvian Foreign Ministry is currently evaluating the issuance of this document.

Pedro castillo remains in prison, facing trial for rebellion, abuse of authority, and disturbing public tranquility.
