Thirteen Magellanic penguins have returned to the open sea on a Brazilian beach after months of intensive care at an animal rehabilitation center. The birds, rescued in serious conditions during their annual migration, received rehydration therapies, nutritional support and physical conditioning, until they were deemed ready for release.
Every year, between June and September, Magellanic penguins migrate from Argentine Patagonia to the warmer waters of the Santa Catarina coast in search of food. During the journey, many suffer exhaustion, hypothermia or nearly drown.
