The Plenary of the Congress has validated on Tuesday with the support of all groups, except Vox, which has been abstained, the Royal Decree Law approved last July in the Council of Ministers, to expand birth permits to 17 weeks and add 2 weeks of paid permits for care. In addition, it has unanimously agreed to process it as a bill.
The Royal Decree Law, which has arrived on Tuesday at the lower house after the Government approved it on July 29 in the Council of Ministers, establishes the expansion in “three weeks”, up to a total of 19 (apart from the three breastfeeding, which would add 22), of the permits paid for fatherhood and care.
Specifically, there are 17 weeks of birth permission, that the parents can enjoy during the first 12 months of the baby, and another two additional weeks paid for the care of the child, from the first year of life and until the child turns 8 years old.
These permits also have the same validity for cases of adoption, family foster care, and add up to the breastfeeding permit, which is still 3 weeks.
In the case of single -parent families, mostly headed by women, the birth permit and care is extended to 32 weeks (28 weeks of birth permission during the first year of the baby’s life and 4 weeks of permission paid for care from the first year and in their first 8 years of life).
At the additional two weeks for care (4 in the case of single -parent), those families who had a baby after August 2, 2024 may also retrient retroactively.
From the Government they ensure that with this measure they comply with the European Directive and set out a sanctioning file that weighed on Spain and that it was assuming to Europe a fine of more than 9,000 euros per day since the month of August of
One million beneficiary fathers and mothers
During the debate on Tuesday in Congress, the Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, has affirmed that with this expansion Spain is placed “at the forefront of Europe” and has assured that this progress will benefit this year “to almost one million people.”
Meanwhile, the deputies of the Popular Party and Podemos have agreed to accuse the government of making “trilerism” with this measure because they consider that they “mix” weeks and “manipulate” the data.
