The Incident: Violence Erupts in Masafer Yatta
A recent incident in the West Bank, involving an attack on Palestinian villages by Jewish settlers, has drawn international attention due to the identity of one of the victims: Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land
.
The attack occurred in Masafer Yatta, a sprawling agricultural region along the southern edge of the West Bank, a location central to Ballal’s acclaimed film. Ballal was later arrested by Israeli forces before being released.
Context: Escalating Settler violence
The incident involving Ballal underscores a disturbing trend of increasing violence against Palestinian communities in the West Bank. According to reports from various human rights organizations, settler attacks have intensified, especially as October 7, 2023.
the Center for jewish Nonviolence reports that settlers invaded the village of Susiya during Ramadan, engaging in vandalism and assaulting Ballal. The organization further alleges that Israeli soldiers arrested the filmmaker while he was receiving medical treatment in an ambulance.
Palestinian Perspectives: Fear and Resistance
Abbas Milhem, director of the Palestinian Boerenvakbond (PFU), expressed a sense of grim expectation regarding the violence.
It is indeed fearful, but also expected…There have been attacks by settlers on Palestinian farming communities such as susiya in Masafer Yatta for a long time. But the violence has been intensified as October 7, 2023.

Milhem believes Ballal was deliberately targeted as of his film’s exposure of the realities of life for Palestinians in the region. The settlers try to silence everyone who exposes the violence,
he stated.
Conflicting Accounts: Israeli Response
the Israeli government offers a different account of the events, disputing claims that Ballal was taken from an ambulance. According to their statement, terrorists
threw stones at Israeli citizens, who retaliated. Soldiers intervened and were subsequently attacked, leading to the arrest of three Palestinians, including Ballal, and one Israeli citizen.

The Broader context: Area C and International Law
Allegra Pacheco, head of the West Bank Protection Consortium, highlights the vulnerability of Palestinians in Area C, which comprises approximately two-thirds of the West Bank and is under Israeli military control.
Pacheco argues that the Israeli army fails to protect Palestinians from settler violence, despite international law mandating them to do so. She notes that Palestinians who attempt to defend themselves often face further violence, and that the vast majority of complaints filed by palestinians are dismissed.
Intimidation and Resistance
While it remains unclear whether Ballal’s international recognition contributed to his swift release, the incident sheds light on the extreme forms of intimidation faced by Palestinians in the West Bank. Despite facing repeated mistreatment, many remain steadfast in their resistance.
