Paddy Cole: A Legendary Irish Musician Remembered

Paddy Cole, 85, passed away on Wednesday at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Dublin after a three-year battle with incurable lung cancer. His life and career were celebrated at a heartfelt funeral Mass at St Mary’s Church in his hometown of Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan. The event, officiated by Fr Brian D’Arcy, was attended by numerous friends, family, and music industry colleagues who came together to remember his extraordinary contribution to Irish showband music and his community.

A Respected Figure in Music

Fr Brian D’Arcy, who has known Cole for over 50 years, described him as a “wonderful character” and a remarkable musician. D’Arcy highlighted Cole’s introduction to the Capitol Showband at just 15 years old, an achievement that marked the beginning of a distinguished career in showbands.

Following his stint in Las Vegas with Brendan Bowyer and the Big Eight Showband, Cole returned to his homeland to form his own band, The Superstars. His talent did not go unnoticed; it was in the heart of jazz culture in New Orleans that he was invited to perform with a jazz band. One musician playing alongside him famously declared, “You are pretty good for a white guy,” which D’Arcy interpreted as a high compliment to Cole’s musical prowess.

A Well-Rounded Entertainer

Beyond his exceptional skills as a musician, Cole was known as a “complete entertainer.” Auditorium-goers often left his shows happier and more energized than when they entered. Reflecting on his friend’s ability to connect with audiences, D’Arcy stated, “Whenever you went to a Paddy Cole gig, you came out happier than you went in.”

Cole’s professionalism was as noteworthy as his musical abilities. Dressed impeccably and well-prepared, he always ensured his performances were a memorable and high-quality experience for his fans. This level of dedication extended beyond his professional life; he was a pillar of his community, particularly through various charitable endeavors.

The Charitable Side of Paddy Cole

Throughout his career, Cole was deeply involved in charitable work. Regular benefactors included Make A Wish, guide dogs for the blind, and local hospitals like St Luke’s. His commitment to helping others was reflected in his personal life as well, where he and his wife Helen were married for nearly 60 years, a testament to his dedication and loving nature.

Extensive musical tributes were a highlight of Cole’s funeral Mass. Songs such as “Stranger on the off-shore” and his rendition of “Amazing Grace” filled the church. Notable musicians including Cathy Nugent, Derek O’Connor, George Hunter, and Ronan Collins, among others, gathered to pay their respects. Personal items like Cole’s clarinet, golf club, and a pair of portraits also made their way to the altar, along with his autobiography, “King of the Swingers.”

A Memorable Farewell

The intimate and emotionally charged funeral was a fitting tribute to Cole’s life and his place in the hearts of his community. Fr D’Arcy expressed his admiration and respect for his friend, summarizing, “It was a very respectful send off. He was a free man of Castleblaney and his people turned out in their droves. The church was packed to overflowing.”

Cole’s legacy extends far beyond his funeral Mass. His children—Pearse, Pat, and Karen—and his nine grandchildren—Sadie, Ava, Jamie, Edel, Ruby, Keelin, Patrick, Dillon, and Scarlett—carry forward his cherished memories. His music and the lessons he imparted through his life continue to inspire and entertain many.
