A study reveals why one nostril works more efficiently than the other

Scientists confirm that feeling that one nostril is working more efficiently than the other is not necessarily evidence of a cold, but rather is part of a natural physiological process known as the “nasal cycle.”
This cycle occurs automatically several times during the day, as the two openings take turns receiving air. While one of the two nostrils is more open to allow a larger amount of air to pass through, the other narrows slightly for a period that may reach about two hours during wakefulness before the role changes between them, according to a study published in the journal “The Conversation.”
This process depends on the two stages of “congestion and decongestion.” The nose needs to change the dominant opening to give the tissues time to rest and repair, and to avoid dryness resulting from the continuous passage of air, which exposes them to germs and suspended materials.
This cycle is managed automatically by the hypothalamus in the brain without conscious intervention, as studies indicate that the activity of the right ventricle may be associated with states of alertness or tension, while the activity of the left ventricle is associated with relaxation.
A vital role in protecting the respiratory system
The nasal circulation plays a vital role in protecting the respiratory system, through which approximately 12,000 liters of air pass daily. This rotation helps moisturize the nasal passages, heat the air, and purify it.
But this cycle may be disturbed due to colds, allergies, or even the use of some medications such as blood pressure medications. Experts also warn against excessive use of decongestant sprays for more than five days, to avoid what is known as “rhinitis medicamentosa,” which causes tissue swelling and blockage of the passages.

In other cases, structural problems such as “nasal polyps” or “deviated nasal septum” may hinder the functioning of this cycle, causing a permanent feeling of blockage. Therefore, experts advise seeing a doctor if one of the two openings remains blocked for more than two weeks, especially if this is accompanied by abnormal secretions, to ensure the exclusion of any infection or health problems that require therapeutic intervention.
