Nintendo Switch Sales Surpass 150 Million: Terminal Approach to Iconic Gaming Milestone
The Nintendo Switch has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 150 million units sold worldwide since its launch in March 2017. This remarkable feat is a testament to the platform’s enduring popularity and the diverse range of games that have captivated players over the years.
Breakdown of Recent Sales
In the most recent quarter, from October 1st to December 31st, 2024, Nintendo sold 4.82 million Switch consoles. The sales are broken down as follows:
- 2.57 million – Switch OLED Model
- 0.76 million – Switch Lite
- 1.48 million – Original Switch
These figures show a strong performance, particularly for the OLED model, which is newer and features enhanced display quality.
Approaching the Nintendo DS Record
With the Switch now at 150.86 million units, the console is just under 4 million sales away from matching the Nintendo DS’s record of 154.02 million units sold. However, the Switch still faces a challenging gap to Sony’s PlayStation 2, which boasts over 160 million units sold.
Comparative Sales in Previous Years
Nintendo reported selling 6.9 million Switch units in the same period last financial year. Software sales also saw a decline, with 53.7 million sold compared to 66.87 million in Q3 2023/24. This year-on-year drop reflects the natural slowdown in the system’s eighth holiday season.

Nintendo Adjusts Sales Forecast
Nintendo recently revised its hardware sales forecast for the financial year ending March 2025, lowering it from 12.5 million to 11 million units. The company attributes the decline to the significant impact of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in 2023, which accelerated early sales.
Looking Ahead to Switch 2
The revelation of the Switch 2 in January 2025 marks a new era in the console’s lifecycle. This new model and its suite of unannounced games promise to revitalize interest and drive sales in the coming months. Investors and fans alike are eagerly anticipating how the new system will perform.
Aging Platform, Strong Performance
While it’s unlikely the Switch will surpass Sony’s PlayStation 2 record, the console’s continued performance is noteworthy. With the Switch 2 on the horizon, gamers can look forward to new hardware and software that will maintain the platform’s competitive edge in the gaming industry.
