The driver’s license remains an essential document for anyone operating a motor vehicle in the country. Both those who request it for the first time and those who require its renewal must meet a series of already established conditions, to which a new requirement could be added after the recent approval of a project in the Chamber of Deputies.
The Chamber of Deputies approved a legislative proposal – promoted by official and independent parliamentarians – which incorporates a new requirement in the processes of obtaining and renewing licenses. The initiative will now advance to the Senate to continue its constitutional process.
What are the current requirements to apply for or renew the license?
The current conditions to access a driver’s license or update it contemplate basic and verifiable elements before the respective Transit Directorate. Among them are:
- Have an up-to-date identification card.
- Have turned 18 years old (or 17, if the person passes a course at a Driving School and has authorization from parents, guardians or legal representatives).
- Have completed basic education.
- Present proof of address, as requested by the corresponding municipality.
- Declare not to consume illicit substances that affect driving.
- Comply with the criteria of moral suitability considered by the Law.
- Pass the theoretical, psychotechnical and practical exams.
- Submit to a medical evaluation required in the process.
What new requirement does the initiative intend to incorporate?
The approved text establishes that people should not appear in the National Registry of Food Pension Debtors when applying for or renewing your license. This condition will be verified by the municipal officials in charge of the procedure.
The proposal also indicates that the license could be canceled if, after its issuance, the holder becomes part of said registry. “To this end, the Municipal Traffic and Public Transportation Departments must carry out a monthly review of the registry and identify debtors domiciled in the commune where they maintain a valid driver’s license,” They explain from the Lower House.
When will those who are rejected be able to request the document again?
Persons prevented from obtaining or renewing their license because they appear in the registry will be able to access the document again once they have been removed from the list. what happens when parental obligations are regularized. The proposal highlights that, in these cases, it will not be necessary to wait the two years of disqualification that apply for other grounds for cancellation.
