Can you no longer stream Netflix to the TV via your mobile phone?

It’s not a technical fault – a new update affects most of the streaming giant’s users.

The latest season of “Stranger Things” just came to Netflix.

In what is described as “quietly”, Netflix has – for some users – removed the ability to stream content from the Netflix mobile app to a television. This was first reported by Android Authority. The change affects, among other things, Chromecast with Google TV, but also other devices that have a remote control.

Only newer models should be affected. On older Chromecast models without a remote control and TV models that have Google Cast, it is still possible to send up what you want to watch. But it should only work if you have a subscription without advertising.

Want to improve the user experience

Netflix themselves believe that the change is made to improve the user experience. An explanation that was met with criticism from several users. In a forum on Reddit, a user believes that the ability to stream via Chromecast disappeared already in mid-November “with zero warning”. In a comment, another user says it is “a huge change for a lot of people and it’s driving me crazy”.

In a comment section at The Verge, several mention that they have canceled their Netflix subscription – or will do so. “Sounds like another reason to stop giving them more of my money”one writes.

After the attention, there has now been an update from the Netflix support service that clarifies what applies:

“Netflix no longer supports casting content from a mobile to most televisions. You need to use the remote control that came with your television or TV streaming device to navigate Netflix content.”
