Nepal Appoints Sushila Karki as Interim Prime Minister, Sets election Date After Week of Unrest

Following a week of deadly anti-graft protests, Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel has dissolved parliament and called for fresh elections.The election is scheduled for March 5, 2026. The protests led to the appointment of the country’s first woman prime minister in the interim, Sushila Karki.
the declaration of the election date came shortly after President Paudel appointed former chief justice Sushila Karki to lead the country. This followed the resignation of prime minister KP Sharma Oli due to the anti-graft protests.
According to a statement from the president’s office, the president “dissolved the House of Representatives … and fixed March 5, 2026, Thursday for the elections”.
Karki’s appointment followed two days of intense negotiations between President Paudel, army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, and protest leaders. the upheaval resulted in at least 51 deaths and over 1,300 injuries.
India has expressed its hope that these developments will contribute to peace and stability in Nepal.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, saying, “Heartfelt congratulations to the Honourable Sushila Karki Ji on assuming the office of Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government. India is fully committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of Nepal’s brothers and sisters.”
