Nausėda on LRT Amendments: Democratic Concerns?

by Archynetys News Desk

“What happened in the Seimas itself is really not very similar to legislation in a democratic state. And I understand that, without a doubt, the ruling coalition was the first to start pushing this cart. In this case, we should probably not talk about the cart, but about the bulldozer,” the head of the country told TV3 television on Thursday.

“The process was started hastily, as if afraid of something, as if a little stealthily. And this immediately set a very bad tone for the whole process – there was that mistrust that turned into seven hundred and nine hundred opposition proposals, a significant number of which really have so little to do with serious laws,” he said.

G. Nausėda notes that the recent processes taking place in the Seimas lead to greater public opposition

“The Seimas, in which decisions are not made or decision-making is turned into a mess, is primarily our own action against ourselves,” the president said.

“That conflict may arise next time because some people think that only they love the homeland, love Lithuania (…), their solutions are the only and indisputable. When we allow others to love the homeland and others allow us (…) to contribute to the well-being of the homeland, then we gain more tolerance for each other,” he emphasized.

ELTA reminds that last week, amendments to the LRT Law, which received criticism from the journalist community, were discussed in an urgent manner in the Seimas.

Due to the amendments to the LRT law, an additional, unscheduled session of the Seimas was called, and the deliberations in the hall and in the Culture Committee lasted for a dozen hours. The meeting of the committee was supposed to take place last Thursday, but it was canceled due to the crippled health of the chairman of the committee, K. Vilkauskas.

In the initial project initiated by the management, it was proposed that the appointment and dismissal of the LRT general director be done by secret ballot. In addition, the general director of the public broadcaster could be dismissed from his position in the event of a vote of no-confidence due to improper performance of the functions or the failure of the Council to approve the annual activity report. Also, more than 1/2 of the council members should vote for such a decision, that is, at least 7 out of 12.

It is true that the amendments to the LRT law, which received a lot of criticism, will be further improved by the working group convened by the head of the parliament, Juozs Olek. The decision to suspend the consideration of amendments to the LRT Law as an emergency procedure was taken after the meeting of the head of the country, the Speaker of the Seimas and the leaders of the parliamentary factions held on Monday at the Presidency.
